Coasting into the countryside at Mid-Ohio Sportscar Course brought beautiful sunny weather and summer smells of cut grass, racing fuel and championship tension through the paddock. I noticed a quote on the helmet of the new points leader that caused me to reflect on a racer’s viewpoint of life. “If you no longer go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver.” - Ayrton Senna. This quote is worthy of a post all by itself, but let me just say that if this mentality isn’t etched in the strands of your DNA, then racing isn’t for you. Christian (the driver on whose helmet this was written) left his mark deeply on the championship taking a second position and two top step finishes this weekend.
I’ve worked the track at Mid-Ohio many times before. In fact it was one of my first NASCAR assignments years ago. As familiar as I feel photographing there I always get the notion that there are many secrets left for me to uncover. Here are a few of my favorites from that weekend in late June.
